First World Problems / Pet Peeves

The title seems kind of self-explanatory to me.
There has been more than one moment when I have heard myself say or think something and then immediately hears myself say/think "God, First World Pet Peeves much?"
The struggle is real.

To better convey the deep seeded displeasure I have with these mild inconveniences, I have brought in the support of my good buddies - 'gifs' (pronounced JUH-iffs... like... Jiffy peanut butter without the "y" at the end. Not Gifs pronounced like you're trying to make a cartoonish and comedic swallow noise. Get it together.).

1. Black Friday Sales.... In Store Only!
Some of us are shut ins and/or live in super rural locations and/or work like 80hrs a week and ain't got no time for stores, or people, or driving, or movement in general. Like come on. Why would you make me put on pants and pre-plan my purchasing binges? Nope.

2. Commercials on Youtube that you can't Click to Skip
This goes for Spotify commercials too.
If I can't click past you, you better guarantee your company just made the list of 'shit I will never buy simply on principle and curmudgeon-mindset alone. I'm looking at you, Ford vehicles.

3. Dishes that can't go in the dishwasher
What do I look like to you, a 19th century pauper living on the streets of some hovel in a colony betwixt smallpox and consumption epidemics? NO. So if you can't survive the dishwasher, you failed  house-initiation and go right to the garbage, mister French Press Coffee Maker. Just saying.

4. Burning things onto nonstick pots
WHY DO YOU FORSAKE ME, TEFLON

5. Glitchy streaming from my macbook to my apple tv
First netflix 'loading' and now this?! I can't even.

6. When I charge/sync my ipod and it doesn't actually do anything
What do you think I'm doing Ipod - connecting usb cords for my health? NO. I WANT TO HEAR MY SHITTY MUSIC AND I WANNA HEAR IT NOW I AINT GETTING ANY YOUNGER. How else am I going to overplay a song until I hate it in the car on the way to/from work!?! Moderation can go f*** itself, amirite?

7. Bugs in nature
I rented this expensive Air BnB cottage so I could get in touch with nature, not so it could get in touch with me. Get out my cottage, moths and get off my dogs, deer ticks.

8. My GI Tract's response to Indian Food
The world's most expensive laxative.
Like... I'm gonna keep buying it. I'm gonna keep eating it. And I'm gonna keep having to be single. I'm just saying.

9. When the Liquor Store discontinued my favorite low calorie low alcohol wine (Late Harvest, obvi)
I didn't want to get drunk OR fat. I wanted to look classy while binge watching Pretty Little Liars with several mixed flavors of kettle chips. What am I supposed to do now, settle for something heartburn-y like Skinnygirl red? ugh.

10. Buying a realistic artificial Christmas Tree
The only christmas tree I've ever owned since moving out of my parents' post high-school graduation was the christmas tree that a roommate left at my house one time like 10 years ago... and he got the tree from his parents... who got it from someone else and then like 40 years before i was born those original owners decided they were sick of this terrible tree so better give it away.

Last year I was putting it up (I even made a youtube video about it which I have since removed because nobody needs to see that) I accidentally stabbed myself on one of the metal pieces and bled and was concerned for a solid hour or two that I might need to get a Tetanus shot. Legit.

Long story short I decided after I moved out of Newfoundland that I would buy a new Christmas tree. But turns out Christmas trees are expensive AF (I thought mad like 125 bucks). Also, the more I thought about buying one the more lofty goals I made for my potential new tree such that now it needs to be at least 7 feet tall, totally real looking without being actually real (because Ezra eats trees...and candles...and pee pads...), already pre-lit with non-LED lights that are both coloured (for when I'm feeling festive) and all white (for when I'm feeling classy). Do you know how much a tree like that costs!? Like... a billion dollars. I can't even.

We're going to end up having to decorate a construction paper tree or something because I'm not made of money, Balsam Hill!!!

So now I have no christmas tree, because black friday only allows me to get 50% off trees and that just ain't enough when you want the same tree that the family's on that show The OC probably couldn't afford. Seriously, if i'm gonna spend that kind of money on a holiday that shit is going up for at LEAST 4 months.

The Budapest Trip

Sorry for the delay on this post! I know a lot of people were aware I went to Budapest a few weeks ago, and I keep saying this blog is partly about traveling so I'd imagine those people were like 'yeah comics whatever where tf is europe u dirtbag'... so without further adeu, here are some of the highlights of my Budapest trip (because otherwise the blog entry would be a friggin' novel)...

THE BUDAPEST TRIP
The idea of traveling to Budapest was more or less on a whim. Hungary has never really been on my list of places I had to visit (quite possibly because I could barely point to it on a map and have never done a day of history lectures in my entire life), but nevertheless a few weeks ago I found myself buying a ~22 hour travel time adventure to a country I've never been that doesn't even speak the same language as I.

For all intents and purposes, this was a solo-female traveler excursion - my first solo excursion outside North America and also not to a resort!

Flights: Lufthansa (Economy/Business)

....ok so I may have splurged a little more than I should have, given that I'm a person of meagre means/no income, but the business class on the Lufthansa flights I took was. the. bomb. The chairs went all the way back into a bed!!!! I got a free bar of chocolate! I got all kinds of cheese and buns and stuff! I could have taken wellness classes while flying (literally)... but I used the time instead for wine and sleep. I regret nothing.
Even the bathroom was classy with its Ren products and its porthole window you could look out while pooping if you should so desire!
So many buttons to push...
So much leg room omg
omg the cheese and balls of butter WHAT
Think i'll check myself out in this full-length
bathroom mirror WHAT
Dat view tho.

The City

I stayed in Budapest during the first 2 weeks of May, which turned out to be a wonderful time weather-wise (with the exception of numerous warm downpours), but not so much a great time in terms of the company I kept. Nevertheless, my couples-excursion was converted to a solo-world-adventure in which I explored a vast amount of the Pest half of Budapest (and a tiny amount of the Buda half) by foot. The ole Fitbit never knew what hit 'er.

Budapest is beautiful in a ye olde colonial way. The buildings are all constructed with big pillars, mosaics and sculptures everywhere and the locals are all very friendly! I still felt a bit of the communist vibe when I went to the parliament but I guess that's to be expected given it's only been about 25yrs since things changed. The city itself is a city of reminders of all the flaws in their past, which I appreciated being a person who has never taken a history class in her life, and also as a person who is pretty big on human rights.

Parliament
Parliament was only a 15minute walk from where I stayed, and is a massive behemoth of a piece of property. I didn't go inside because, frankly I was a little freaked out by the guards and you know, the big rungs of rope keeping me from going indoors or on the grass. I did, however, wander around like the tourist I am and stared at things from afar while trying to make them look majestic on camera.

"Misses can I borrow your stone pencil?"
"Bitch get yo' own pencil"

The one thing I want to note is on Parliament there is an underground monument-type thing about a mysterious tragedy that occurred in October 1956. That underground showcase will haunt me for years to come. I couldn't take pictures, nor did I want to, but I am wiser to know what the people of Budapest went through in order to obtain their freedom from Communism. It's just really F'ing sad to go back up into the light with the lush greenery, beautiful statues of horses and thousands of tourists with their selfie-sticks after seeing that massacre. When I came back up from viewing everything and being thoroughly disturbed, I saw a little old man sitting in the distance staring up at the parliament building - he looked easily old enough to remember the massacre. And I felt so bad knowing that there were still people with real memories of the day their loved ones were slaughtered. Honestly, I wanted to throw up and so at that point I left the square and wandered onward to find something less tragic to focus on.
Bye Parliament.

Shoes on the Danube
Not to be outdone by Parliament's commemoration of 1956, are the Shoes on the Danube.
The Danube river is the large body of water that separates Budapest into Buda and Pest. During WW2, the river was also used as a method of getting rid of bodies after unfortunate souls were lined up, shot and killed by the Arrow Cross. Some time afterward (2005), a sculptor reconstructed several dozen pairs of shoes out of iron in typical 1940s fashion to memorialize the location that those people were murdered.
That was singlehandedly the most powerful memorial I have ever seen.

Fisherman's Bastion
Fisherman's Bastion is, unfortunately, the only thing I had the opportunity to see on the Buda side of Budapest! It's known as one of the most romantic places to visit in the city, and with good reason. The big stone castle has ye olde music players at the top and within the bleached white stone walls, there's turrets to explore and all kinds of food/wine to buy if you were so inclined. I was acutely aware that I wasn't with a significant other while there, since everyone else and their dog had someone to hold hands with. Yolo.
Fisherman's Bastion
Hey buddy in the creepy hallway, play me a tune

The Ruin Pubs (Szimpla Kert)

From what I can gather, Ruinpubs are/were abandoned buildings that have been makeshifted into hippin' hoppin' night clubs that during the day are kind of awkward boring locations to visit as a tourist for a cheap drink. I visited the most popular (Szimpla Kert) in the Jewish district. It was very similar to what I previously mentioned... Kind of a hodgepodge of things that looked as though they were taken from garbage dumps (tricycles on the ceiling, etc) and put on the walls/ceiling/floors/etc. Not exactly the most polite crew at 3pm, nor the best food by any means (tasted pretty store bought), but was a fine enough location to walk to and from. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to any others though.

Food!
Prior to my Budapest trip I was doing the vegetarian ketogenic diet, but knowing how restrictive that can be (every single meal had to be custom made by me) I opted to go back to a normal ovo-lacto vegetarian diet while traveling. Which meant cheese. A lot of cheese. In many different forms (ie., cheesecake). The most amazing of all cheesecakes was the Black Mamba at Edesmindegy. Omfg. Peanut butter and chocolate and graham wafer etc etc etc I can't describe to you how good it was unless I use the one true sentence: I ate it one morning... for breakfast.
Wars could have been fought for this cheesecake.
There are two other vegetarian specialties within the hungarian food world, both of which look very similar in writing but are completely different in person. And one is super gross. Of course, I went looking for the delicious one (Langos - fried bread dough with toppings... kind of like a supreme Touton/Beavertail) and in doing so ended up ordering the gross one (Lecso), which was a mishmash of vegetarian stew that had scrambled eggs in it for some reason. How unfortunate.
What. Is this. Stew with identity crisis: Lecso
Other things you need to know: Budapest knows how to do Sushi and Indian Food. oh. mygod.

Anyway, that seems like a lengthy enough review! Sorry I didn't touch on all the things (the baths, Margaret Island, the bridges, etc), but hopefully this will be of some help to someone when they're trying to figure out if they want to go to Budapest <3

Guess Who's Back...

Instagram
Hi world!

Indie photobomb selfie

Very quick blog before work and then I swear I'll write a catchup one but I wanted to give a heads up this blog might go another way for a bit.
I've been doing some/a lot of traveling with some/a lot more to go this year and I wanted to do some travel blogs.
I've also been following a low-calorie ketogenic ovo-lacto vegetarian diet (yes, that's a thing now) and I wanted to address that as well potentially with some recipes I've been slowly coming up with.

I did, however, finally buy a new stylus for my tablet since my dogs ate my original one so there may be comics in the future.

Right now I'm a bit limited on time for comics because I'm studying for my qualifying exam to graduate med school and start my residency!

Hopefully you guys don't mind the shift from the comedian + gif world (can't say that world is gone completely though because really who are we trying to kid) to Traveling, Food, Medicine and other things wonderful and mature... and I hope to hear from you soon!

xoxoxoxo

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR OMG

Hi everyone!
It's Christmas time (in my world, anyway)!
In lieu of such a wonderous time when I have an excuse to perpetually have candles lit, pretty lights streamed across my everything, and adorable matching onsies on the dogs... here is a Christmas story I wrote a few years ago.
It's offensive.
So...
yeah.

A BEARY MERRY CHRISTMAS

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a bear named Frank. Frank didn’t know he was a bear however, because he owned no mirrors (nor did he know what reflection meant) and had no friends. He also had no hair.
Growing up, Franks mother asked him ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ and Frank always responded, without hesitation: “I want to be different, and I want to fit in”. His mother would laugh and tell her son that the sentence was oxymoronic; you can’t fit in if you’re weird, and animals that are different are weird.
Frank didn’t really know who, or where, his dad was and so all he had to go by was this ostentatious mother with her traditional and critical views.
So for most of his adolescent bear life, Frank was too insecure to go to bear-school, or go outdoors to play with the other wildlife. Frank didn’t even look outside because he was afraid that other more normal-looking creatures would look in the window and start pointing with their hooves or their paws and laugh at him.
But one day, when Frank woke up, he decided that he had had enough of living in his bear-cave, cold and hairless as he was. He decided to run away.
So he packed his little bear bag and boogied out of the cave while his mean mom was away doing old-lady-bear things.
Outside was more massive than he thought. His cave was on an island that had ___ spokes of varying land branching from his little nucleus home. Each spoke-like pathway was different and scary but amazing to see from his viewpoint. Never had Frank seen bushy green things blowing in the wind atop big brown stalks, nor had he seen yellow-white micro-rocks mushed into dunes, soft and heavy and warm. He had definitely never seen the white powdery and sleety stuff that rained down like a thicket of rosebush thorns (he had seen those in a book once!), and it looked cold and unpleasant. Even moreso, spoke that held the land of white and cold was broken; he would have to swim really far in really dark scary water to even set foot on the horrid-looking place, so Frank decided to never walk that way.
So what was there to do but to decide a path and follow it, with the hopes of finding a way to be different but fit in all the same.
The path straight in front of him was made of the fine little rocks. Frank decided that he might as well pick that one, because it was a pretty color and looked kind of warm (and having no fur, he was cold!)
Frank didn’t make it far before he ran into a big ugly hard-shelled bug with a giant stabby-object on its tail. The insect introduced himself as a scorpion.
“Oh sure, there’s all kinds of scorpions out this way!” the critter told Frank, between awkward sidelong glances.
“What are you looking at?” Frank asked, ever-so self-conscious of what he didn’t see of himself.
“My, you have no hair!” The scorpion laughed. “Are you a giant hairless guinea pig?”
Frank was pretty offended, even though he had no idea what a guinea pig was but he knew pigs weren’t a label he wished to carry around.
“No! I am a bear!” Frank proclaimed indigently.
“Suuure you are” the scorpion chuckled, before scuttling away like the creepy little bug that he was.

Frank decided he didn’t want to live in a land where there were millions of scorpions scuttling around being assholes and making fun of his odd appearance. So he turned around and walked back to the nucleus of the bike-spokes that was his cave.
Frank chose the spoke to the right of the sand path, which was full of greenery and mud. He decided it was an okay place because it had lots of caves like the one he had been living in, and there was all kinds of things running around on all fours. He met some squirrels, but they talked to fast for him to understand what they were saying. He saw some rabbits but they were scared of everything and ran away from him before he could even say hello.
Then he saw a four legged thing that looked kind of like the shape he was. So he bustled over to the big brown furry thing.
“Hey there!” Said Frank, “are you a bear?”
The bear nodded, while sizing Frank up and down with curious eyes.
“Indeed I is, but what is you?” it said.
Frank smiled a big bear smile and said “I’m a bear too!”
The brown bear shook his big ole furry head and responded “youre not a bear like me. I has fur. You’re hairless… and black. And we don’t like thangs that are dafferent. Us grizzlies don’t like competition. And we don’t like that you’re a daffrent color than us. SO you git on away whar you came from, yew ugly ole black critter!”
And with that, the grizzly turned around and walked away, murmerin away to himself about how them black hairy bears that have been comin’ around must have some freaks among ‘em. And he mumbled some more racial comments.
So Frank turned around again, discouraged and confused that some bears could hate on other bears just because of the color of their skin. He mused ‘I bet no other kinds of animals are that ridiculous in their prejudices!’.
So back he went to the nucleus. There was only two pathways left; the snowy one that meant he had to swim, and he imagined that sunk like a big black rock, so he opted for the only other choice.
He decided to take the most left-sided spoke, which was filled with mountains and green leafy things. So he walked and he walked and he climbed and he climbed. It got cold the higher he went, and soon he started seeing four-legged things far far away.
Weary, and discouraged but determined to find bears that he would fit in with, Frank trudged over to the beasts.
These beasts were black and white.
“Surely this is where I belong!” Frank thought. “The grizzly told me I was black, and these bears are black as well! Maybe they won’t mind my hairlessness!”
The black and white bear was sat on his bum, eating big leafy leaves and looking like he’d been punched in both eyes with his big black rings on his puffy white face.
“Oh Hay there, thsailor!” The new bear said.
“Hey, other bear” Frank replied.
“What’s yo sexy self doin’ in these parts?” The new bear asked.
Frank was pretty confused because this bear was definitely friendly, but he was maybe a bit too friendly and he didn’t know if this was where he fit. So he asked, “am I the same as you? Is this where I belong? I’ve travelled to pretty much every corner of the world, and you’re the only one that looks like me!”
The black and white bear looked disappointed and replied, “oh honay no… try as you might, you aren’t like my kind. You’re all black, and only black. My kind swings both ways; we’re black and white. Sorry my love, but this aint the place for you!”

Frank was so sad. So so sad. Nowhere wanted him. There was nowhere in the whole wide world where he could fit in but be accepted for his differences. Even the bears that went both ways/colors wished they could accept him, but they knew the only way Frank would be happy would be if he didn’t have to work to be like everyone else. So that simply wasn’t there.
As Frank trudged back to the nucleus-cave, he hung his head all sad. Maybe nowhere there will be anyone that loves me, he thought. Maybe I should just go live alone forever where nobody has to deal with my oddness, my blackness, my hairlessness. Maybe I should just go to the big white place and crawl in a hole and die.”

So, begrudgingly and dejected, Frank turned toward the icy water and flopped in. The water was cold and he was sad and crying but he barely even knew it because there was water everywhere and he was too cold to care.
He landed in the big white cold place and immediately thought it was a stupid place that never should have existed. But he wandered on deep into the crisp white cold. He wandered for days and saw nothing and nobody. Just more snow and more ice and more frigid black water.
On the third day, there was a blizzard. Snow was everywhere and Frank felt like he was walking in circles. He realized he had no idea why he was even walking since clearly there was nowhere to go and he was all alone, sticking out like a sore thumb in this world of white with his hairless black coat.
But from a distance, Frank saw a blip. A little red blip.
And that little red blip was heading toward him.
So he watched the blip, wondering what in the world would be in this icy land, and why would it be such a bright bright color.
The red blip turned into a human. It was hairless on its face, except for a big bushy white beard, and had a big red suit on covering a fat full belly. He even had little white gloves on and a big red hat.
“Ho Ho Ho!” The human said, “why so sad, rare and bare, big black bear?”
The bear told his story and said he was giving up and was just going to die here alone, frozen cold and black and weird.
“Ho ho no! That’s not the way things should be! Let me look in my bag and see what I see? Ho Ho! Don’t you know! There’s a present just for you, it’s true!”
And with that, the man with the big white beard hauled out a giant white fluffy coat, big enough for Frank and just the perfect size.
“I came out for you, my black bear who was blue. And I knew it was time to help. So I give you this coat, keeps you warm and afloat, and on this Christmas morn, I name you reborn. And forever you’ll be my polar bear.”
But what’s more, the man pointed with his big white mitten, to a space of pure white much like every other. But shortly after he pointed, he snapped his other hands fingers, and out of the bleak there was movement.
Soon the man and Frank were greeted by dozens of bears wearing big white coats around their black skin and dark noses, and they ran to hug Frank in greeting.
And forever from that day, Frank belonged in the world with others different just like him, and happy to bring him into their family with open arms.
But when Frank finished hugging, and went to thank the man, he turned and nothing was there. Just white and more white, not one lick of red.
“Who was that?” Frank asked his new family and friends.
“His name’s Santa. He helped us find each other. We’ll see him again next year when he finds another bear, different like you, but just as welcome to fit in with our clan.

So a Christmas Miracle came true for Frank. And every Christmas, the Spirit of Santa might save anyone, even those who don’t feel lost but may feel alone. With festive colors and cookies and trees and Christmas carols, everyone is welcome to join in, different and unique all the same.

The Rise and Fall of Relationships (as told by Breaking Bad)

Explaining the Rise and Fall of Relationships
(with a little help from my good buddies at...)

***Before we even do this.... can I just say that I love Hank and I'm rewatching the whole thing and I'm on season 4 and I'm like.... like my heart is breaking for poor ole Hank. God love him. OK lets do this!*

Everyone starts the single life a little emo (once it hits them that they're single). Maybe you're just getting out of some kind of thing... or maybe you've just lived your entire life as an asshole. Whooo knows!

So you busy yourself with trivial things. Maybe you binge watch a series of something on netflix... maybe you waste your $$$ on weird and unnecessary thingamajigs to distract yourself from being you know.. alone or whatever.

All the while you're just like.. Hey man, what's wrong with me? I'm pretty friggen awesome. Coeds should be linin' up fer a bitta dis awesomeness!

And then, out of no where... some super cool but awkward and smart and funny and all things good in the world shows up and ur like.. HAYYYYYYY ;)

And they're like... HOLY SHAT WHERE U BEEN ALL MY LYFE

And for a while things are just the bees knees, u know? You guys are all...expanding each others horizons and whatever... becoming better people etc etc etc. Shit's just THSUPERR!

And I mean, sure they have their little quirks, like eating kale salads or something nasty like that.. but those differences just makes them even more interesting!

But then simple things start turning into bigger deals... and suddenly all those weird things that were quirky and adorable are just reeeeeal friggen annoying.
NO SHIT THANKS FOR TELLING ME

And then they start keeping shit from you...

And criticizing your everything

And just being an all around *expletive deleted*

At some point the lines of communication break down

And there might come a time when you resort to name calling

So instead you try to find solace in other things

And then... you know.... surprise surprise things don't work out and that once super romantic and adorable relationship you had going for you ceases to exist.

So you spend some time catching up on your "you" time. Doing all the "you" things that you need to do to get back to some kind of normality.

And when that doesn't work you turn to your girl friends. And you whine and whine and be annoying etc etc etc.

But your friends, because they're your friends, don't let you get on with that shit; they tell you all the things you already know. THAT BOY WAS A WASTE OF TIME GURL YOU CAN DO BETTER MMMHMMM
preach it, girl!

So you do what anyone should do post-break up and get rid of all the things that remind you of said person who wasted your time

And you say goodbye to all them memories you thought you were gonna make with your imaginary kids and imaginary house with your imaginary sunny weather every day

And then before you know it, you get up, dust yourself off... and get back into the world better and wiser than before.

But then, you know... if that doesn't work there's always the nearest Home Depot

Jk :)
